WWW Wednesday – 1st March 2017

Okay, how are we in March already? I’m pretty sure I was unwrapping Christmas presents and drinking too much gin only last week?

These past couple of weeks have been a little manic with work and a vacation thrown into the mix, so I haven’t had chance to participate in WWW Wednesday. I feel like I’m back on track now, though, and have a couple of reviews lined up for later this week. Maybe I’ll even throw in a Date Nights feature πŸ˜‰

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words. To take part, all you’ve got to do is answer the three Ws below and post a link to your answers here. Be sure to check out other people’s answers, too! I say this a lot but it really is an awesome way to interact with other bloggers.

My great grandma passed away last week. Her death follows a struggle against the evil that is dementia and it is a struggle she had to endure for near enough 14 years. But dying is a strange thing, is it not? Back in the not so distance past, death was a part of everyday life. In the 1800s, in some parts of the UK, the average life expectancy was a mere 30 years. Over the course of a century, though, factors such as improved living conditions, better food and scientific research have seen this average life expectancy soar. Dying is no longer a part of everyday life and, consequently, it’s become almost taboo to talk about it. We want to live forever (cryogenic freezing being proof of this). We brush mentions of death under the carpet, hoping that by ignoring it it will somehow ‘go away’. I bought The Language of Dying in the hopes of being able to process my current feelings.

I received an ARC copy of Valen, the second book in Felicity Heaton’s Guardians of Hades series. I really enjoyed the first book, Aresbut somehow I ended up enjoying Valen even more. However, as much as I love the front cover, one of my friends said it looks like the cover model has, to quote, “really dramatically stubbed his toe” and now that she’s said it, I can’t unsee it…review out tomorrow! πŸ™‚

I have no idea what this book will be like, but I totally judged it by its cover because it looked so colorful and pretty! I bought this in Manchester, in a coffee/book shop. They have this deal where if you buy a book, you get a free drink! Me, always the idiot, bought my drink and then bought a book. The barista was determined to give me a free drink, though, and sent me out into the cold and rain armed with a take out cup of mocha coffee. If any of you British folk find yourselves in Manchester, be sure to check out Chapter One Books.

    1. I do it all the time πŸ˜› More so when the cover is horrendous, which is unfortunate because I’ve read some fantastic books with awful covers!

      Thank you πŸ˜€

  1. I’m sorry to hear about your great-grandmother. I lost mine to dementia too. It’s weird how much we’ve tried to separate death from everyday life, as if it isn’t a part of it. The cover of The Language of Dying is really beautiful. I’m interested to see what you think!

    1. It’s a horrible disease, isn’t it? I’m sorry for your loss too. As cliched as it might sound, at least neither of them are suffering anymore.

I finished The Language of Dying in one day. To use yet another cliche, I couldn’t put it down! I’m hoping to write a review tomorrow or Saturday πŸ™‚

    1. I finished The Language of Dying over the course of yesterday (which surprised me since I was working). I think I’ll need a good couple of hours to write its review. I really want to do it justice when I write about it. It’s such a beautiful piece of literature!

Thanks for dropping by πŸ™‚ I hope you enjoy your week too!

  2. That’s so funny. I actually am not usually a fan of half naked men and women on covers (It just doesn’t turn me on to a book) but once I read what your friend said, I was totally fine with it because it made me laugh. I do love this kind of storyline so I may go to Amazon and check out the first in the series. Have a great week. So sorry about your grandmother. I lost mine last year.

    1. I know, I’m sometimes put off by these types of covers (despite being an avid romance reader! I guess it can make them look really cheesy!) I can’t recommend the series enough πŸ™‚ I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I have so far!

  3. I’m so sorry to hear about your grandmother… You will be in my thoughts and prayers 😊 Also, I really wanna read Furthermore! I hope to get to it soon. Probably not this month, unfortunately. So many ARC’s to catch up on!
