WWW Wednesday – 1st March 2017

Okay, how are we in March already? I’m pretty sure I was unwrapping Christmas presents and drinking too much gin only last week?

These past couple of weeks have been a little manic with work and a vacation thrown into the mix, so I haven’t had chance to participate in WWW Wednesday. I feel like I’m back on track now, though, and have a couple of reviews lined up for later this week. Maybe I’ll even throw in a Date Nights feature 😉

My great grandma passed away last week. Her death follows a struggle against the evil that is dementia and it is a struggle she had to endure for near enough 14 years. But dying is a strange thing, is it not? Back in the not so distance past, death was a part of everyday life. In the 1800s, in some parts of the UK, the average life expectancy was a mere 30 years. Over the course of a century, though, factors such as improved living conditions, better food and scientific research have seen this average life expectancy soar. Dying is no longer a part of everyday life and, consequently, it’s become almost taboo to talk about it. We want to live forever (cryogenic freezing being proof of this). We brush mentions of death under the carpet, hoping that by ignoring it it will somehow ‘go away’. I bought The Language of Dying in the hopes of being able to process my current feelings.

Recently finished reading

I received an ARC copy of Valen, the second book in Felicity Heaton’s Guardians of Hades series. I really enjoyed the first book, Ares, but somehow I ended up enjoying Valen even more. However, as much as I love the front cover, one of my friends said it looks like the cover model has, to quote, “really dramatically stubbed his toe” and now that she’s said it, I can’t unsee it…review out tomorrow! 🙂

Next on my reading list

I have no idea what this book will be like, but I totally judged it by its cover because it looked so colorful and pretty! I bought this in Manchester, in a coffee/book shop. They have this deal where if you buy a book, you get a free drink! Me, always the idiot, bought my drink and then bought a book. The barista was determined to give me a free drink, though, and sent me out into the cold and rain armed with a take out cup of mocha coffee.
